On the 3rd day we decided to go more strenuous and headed to the Overlook Mountain Trail. We stopped for breakfast at the famous Phoenicia Diner to fuel before the hike. This trail, while strenuous and uphill, did not require bouldering rocks. We went past an old abandoned hotel which used to be a fancy resort decades ago when The Catskills were a popular destination for New Yorkers escaping the heat of summer in the city. We explored the ruins before continuing using up to the summit where there was a stone platform that gave us a view of The Hudson River and surrounding land for many miles around. We then walled over to the old fire tower and climbed to the top for more sweeping views. We hiked back down, returned to the car and stopped in Woodstock, NY at a seafood shack called Oyster Party for oysters and lobster rolls. There was still a few hours of light in the day so we looked for more interesting sites and found The Shokan Resovoir. This included a scenic drive on a bridge over the water to an island with a rocky beach and hundreds of fishing boats curiously stored in the woods along the coast. We gathered driftwood to bring back to camp which we found burned much more easily than the hard wood we had been using for firewood previous nights. Alex brought along his guitar to continue practicing his lessons and learned to play Happy Birthday while enjoying a cold beer by the warm fire.
