We have always wanted to visit Telluride, a fairly remote town in Southwestern Colorado. Originally a mining town, it’s now famous for great skiing, hiking, and mountain biking. This trip was the perfect opportunity to check it out for a couple days.
Telluride is about a 3 hour drive from Crested Butte, where we spent the last two days. We got here in late afternoon and headed straight for Bridal Veil Falls, where we intended to go on a hike from a waterfall to a lake on top of the mountain. This required driving up the mountain on a steep unpaved road that challenged Carl’s (our car’s) limits. We navigated a rocky path until we reached a point that didn’t seem possible in our car, and turned back.
Undeterred, we decided to hike all the way up instead of driving. The steep hike rewarded us with amazing views, waterfalls, and even some wild raspberries.

In the evening, we found a nearby campground and claimed the last available site. As everywhere else we’ve camped so far, the view was great and we enjoyed looking up at the stars as we sat around the campfire.

The next morning, we set out for Bridal Veil Falls again, planning to hike to the top of the mountain where there’s an old hydro electric plant at the top of the waterfall. It was a long and steep hike, and although we didn’t get to the very top, we had a satisfying and full day of hiking.
Back in the town, we rewarded our efforts with a beer and some food before hitting the road. Rather than spending another night in Telluride, we decided to drive a few hours to Grand Junction on our way to a wedding in Victor, Idaho, where we have to be tomorrow night.
